Nevada Radon Program Outreach to Building and Realty Trades

Nevada’s Radon Education Program provides outreach to groups and individuals to raise awareness and provide assistance about radon issues. In May of 2018, the Nevada Organization of Building Officials held its annual meeting and heard a presentation by Susan Howe of the Radon Education Program. Twenty-five members attended and heard her remarks about health risks, mitigation process and the International Residential Code (IRC) Appendix F for radon control methods. Howe, a member of the IRC Amendment Committee for Northern Nevada, serves as the committee’s secretary. Attendees at her presentation to the Building Officials were interested in future educational opportunities for builders, city and county policymakers, and the general public.

In other outreach, Susan Howe and Nadia Noel gave an individual presentation on the radon health risk and the importance of radon-reducing new construction (RRNC) to Don Tatro, Executive Director of the Builders Association of Northern Nevada (BANN). They discussed health risks, mitigation options, and projected costs of mitigations. Also discussed were options for increased discussions with persons in the building industry and the possibility of a presentation to the builders association in Nevada.

In April 2018, Nadia Noel made a presentation to realtors that was attended by 35 plus individuals. Topics included health risk, testing for the gas and the process of mitigation. Information packets were distributed and some requested brochures or literature to distribute to clients. Test kits (29) were given to attendees. The Program will be presenting to other realty offices during 2018.
