Virginia Governor Proclaims National Radon Action Month

WHEREAS, radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, and odorless radioactive gas that is the number one cause of lung cancer in the United States among non-smokers; and

WHEREAS, children may receive higher radiation doses from radon exposure due to their smaller lungs and faster breathing rates; and

WHEREAS, radon exposure is a preventable health risk, and homes can easily be tested for harmful levels of radon using do-it-yourself test kits or the services of a radon professional; and

WHEREAS, Virginians are encouraged to protect their families from the serious health risks associated with radon by taking measures to reduce harmful radon levels if found in their homes; and

WHEREAS, 46 of Virginia's counties and 15 of Virginia’s cities have been identified as having a high risk for radon exposure and are encouraged to adopt Appendix F of the International Residential Building Code pertaining to Radon Resistant New Construction; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health’s Radon Program offers outreach and educational efforts to help reduce the lung cancer risk posed by elevated levels of indoor radon; and

WHEREAS, National Radon Action Month is an opportunity to educate individuals on the available measures to reduce radon;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize January 2020 as NATIONAL RADON ACTION MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
