Abstract: The importance of determination of the blank indication for active radon monitors is discussed. Two new blank chambers were developed at ENEA-INMRI that allows such determination with an uncertainty lower than a few Bq/m3. Results are reported and that show the large blank variability between radon active monitors and its growth with time when such monitors are used at high radon concentrations.

Abstract: The electronic radon monitors are noted for their convenience and acceptable accuracy. Even so, it is necessary to reassure their data quality regularly. We utilized a performance comparison system for this purpose. The instruments in our laboratories (Alphaguard, RAD7, RTM-2100 and Safety Siren) were tested via the comparison experiments. We conclude that by utilizing this system with the concept of calibration factor, it can be helpful to decide whether to send the monitors back to the original manufacturers for adjustment.

Radon Flux Measurements as Predictor for Indoor Radon Concentrations in New Home Residental Structures

Abstract:A method measuring vertical upwards total radon soilgas flow from the ground through building sites before construction is investigated as a predictor for the radon
concentration inside a home after construction. The theory for this radon risk evaluation
(RRE) is derived and simple analytical and more realistic numerical examples are given.
Data obtained from short term radon tests inside homes are compared with numerical
model calculations leading to additional insights that are validating empirically the
derived connection between radon flux into the building and the radon concentrations.
Special circumstances allowed the comparison of over two orders of magnitude of radon
concentrations of finished homes with RRE radon concentrations that were obtained
