Risk of Radon Induced Lung Cancer is Manageable
Mt Vernon, IL - January 13, 2009 - The United States Environmental
Protection Agency - USEPA- has proclaimed January as National Radon Action
Month. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. It is
an odorless, colorless, tasteless, radioactive gas. The World Health
Organization has stated that world-wide, radon accounts for 43 % of an
individual's average annual radiation exposure.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency recently released an updated study
of radon testing in Illinois. The study shows that 42% of the houses that
have been tested in Illinois have radon levels above the action level of 4
Pico curies per liter of air. This study summarized nearly 72,000 home tests
conducted by professional contractors and homeowners between the years of
2003 and 2007. A copy of the press release is available at
http://silradon.blogspot.com/2009/01/illinois-radon-level-update.html.
The exposure to radon induced radioactivity is something that can be
controlled. By conducting a simple test and taking action to reduce
elevated radon levels when discovered, individuals can have a direct impact
the amount of radioactive exposure that they occur on an annual basis.
Taking action to reduce elevated radon levels when discovered reduces the
entire families' risk of contracting radon induced lung cancer.
Low cost radon tests can be purchased on line and are available at home
improvement centers.
The USEPA, Illinois Emergency Management Agency, and the Southern Illinois
Radon Awareness Task Force urge everyone to test their home for radon during
National Radon Action Month.
The lung cancer that you prevent by conducting a radon test and taking
corrective action if necessary may be your own.
