I’ll defer to the health physicists and other such experts
to discuss further, but one potential miscommunication that could occur when
the average person is viewing this clip is the concept that alpha radiation is the
“weakest” of the types of radiation examined.  And since we
say we’re concerned about the alpha radiation from RDPs, the false
conclusion could be reached that radon and its DPs “aren’t so bad.”

However, we need to communicate that alpha radiation delivers
its considerable energy throughout a much smaller total mass than does
gamma.  And since the issue is not only one of the amount of ionizing
energy deposited per volume (or mass) of tissue, but also the fact that the
dose is delivered to a thin layer of carcinogen-sensitive tissue in immediate
proximity to the RDPs, the risk of developing cancer is significant.

Awesome clip!  That brought back memories!  Next time the
AARST conference is in Las Vegas, someone will have to check if the poker chips
are radioactive.  Seeing the chips handled without any protection made me
rather uncomfortable.

Subject: [RNPROF] Found a Mr. Wizard 1960s radiation film clip!

Hello
everyone,

Last
week I posted a question about films and videos that the group might know of
that would help describe alpha radiation to the everyday Joe. I found this
link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSiNXBLfzK4
to
an old 1960's Mr. Wizard show called "Radiation Explained Alpha, Beta and
Gamma - 1960s Mr Wizard".

Mr.Wizard uses
a sample of PO-210 to demonstrate its' activity - how familiar! Brings
back memories of the 60's, when radiation was just something to play with and
win wars! This might be good to help your radon clients understand radiation...
maybe not.

I'm
still looking for similar animations, so if anyone comes across something let
me know!

Thanks,
David
