Kevin - regarding your inquiry"This makes me think that someone (Dr. Thun? Dr. Oliveira? NCI?) has calculated estimates for radon-induced deaths for each of all 50 U.S. states, and made a list. Has anyone seen such a thing?"
I have done such a calculation for New York State using town populations, geometric mean radon levels in the towns, exposures in WLM/yr, lifetime relative risks from NCRP, ICRP, and BEIR, as well as a few other input parameters. I calculated that the number of radon-related lung cancer deaths in NY is very, very near 1000. But be assured that an epidemiologist would not approve of the method, thus I never published the methodology or results. I believe I have the most accurate radon data for NY but would still like to know what value someone else may have calculated.

Good article in general, Jay, but with respect to J. P. in particular, a little off-target since Dr. Field has written (1/23/2012) …
“If I am interpreting, the press reports correctly, it is my understanding that it was not a “primary” lung cancer. Mount Nittany Medical Center issued a statement indicating that Coach Paterno died from "metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung." Metastatic cancer to the lungs is the spread of cancer from another part of the body to the lungs.”
(R. William Field, PHD, MS The University of Iowa, College of Public Health Department of Occupational & Environmental Health)
The newsmaxhealth article does not address the relatively frequency with which metastatic lung cancer occurs compared with primary lung cancer, in current smokers, former smokers, or never smokers, but those statistics would be interesting to know as well.
However, my interest was piqued by the last paragraph from the article you sent, Jay, which includes the line “…Pennsylvania is considered a hotspot for the radioactive contaminant. The state is second in the nation for radon-caused deaths behind California.” This makes me think that someone (Dr. Thun? Dr. Oliveira? NCI?) has calculated estimates for radon-induced deaths for each of all 50 U.S. states, and made a list. Has anyone seen such a thing? If so, I am curious how carefully done those estimates are.
