Radon Stakeholder Dialogue
Overview
The Radon Stakeholder Dialogue is a voluntary, on-going forum for conversation and collaboration among the primary stakeholder group working on Radon in the United States. The goals of the Radon Stakeholder Dialogue are to expand our capacity as a thoughtful group of cooperating and mutually dependent participants to increase public awareness, testing and mitigation of existing homes, and radon-resistant construction of new homes so that we will achieve or exceed our national goals. To that end, the Dialogue has been designed to:- Increase mutual understanding among groups and members of the radon community regarding their respective roles and responsibilities, capacities and limitations, and interests and concerns.
- Increase collaboration, participation and engaged decision-making among all interested groups on a range of issues affecting the radon community, and to develop new decisions and agreements on these issues that will increase and improve national radon awareness, testing, and mitigation.
- Improve relationships, trust, and protocols of communication within and between groups and sectors working on radon.
History
The Radon Stakeholder Dialogue was initially suggested by EPA at the 2006 National Radon Conference and International Radon Symposium, as a response to tension and misunderstandings among the primary radon stakeholders. EPA then hired a neutral facilitation firm, the Consensus Building Institute (CBI), to undertake an assessment of the challenges and opportunities that existed within the radon community. CBI presented the results of this assessment at a meeting in Washington DC in January 2007 to a broad group of stakeholders, including members of USEPA, State Radon Contacts and E-25, NRSB, NEHA-NRPP, CRCPD, AARST, and the AARST Standards Consortium. Most of the assembled groups expressed a willingness to convene to create a Stakeholder Dialogue.- Radon Stakeholder Dialogue Group Protocols

Standards
ASTM, the Standards Consortium, and other accredited ANSI standard-setting bodies have been working to update and develop new standards in areas where such standards are outdated or missing. You can help in this effort. Below are links to more information and current opportunities for involvement.- Learn about standards work in progress, offer public comment, or volunteer to participate as a stakeholder delegate for committee decisions on a radon standards document through the AARST Consortium on National Radon Standards. Please visit http://www.aarst.org/consortium_radon_standard.shtml for more details.
- ASTM is a voluntary standards development organization which requires membership to participate. Radon Standards have been developed under Technical Committee E06, on Performance of Buildings, subcommittee E06.41, on air leakage and ventilation performance. ASTM membership can be obtained by going to ASTM.org, by joining either E06, for voting rights on everything under that committee, or joining E06.41, providing voting rights only on that subcommittee’s work.
Quality Assurance
Existing proficiency programs offer curriculum and tests to radon professionals. Proficiency on the tests allows professionals to be listed as proficient and ensure that the bodies recommending them are recommending competent practitioners. However, this group has discussed the need to:- Increase the number of listed professionals who are highly trained.
- Ensure that all listed professionals are continuously maintaining and increasing their skills and abilities.
- Raise the bar of skill and proficiency for all.
